Kepresentative Forney thinks that Congress will adjourn by Sep tember 10, and that the Seuate will not act on the tantt bill. There is a proposition -on foot among Democratic Congressman to have Shaker Carlisle challenge Mr. Blaine for a series of twelve joint discussions on the tariff, to take place m twelve different cit ies. Mr. Carlisle has expressed his willingness, but whether Blaine will agree or not is doubt! ui. The Senate has passed a bill amending the postal crimes act of June last. It is Very compreheu sive, covering about every case that can possibly arise from im properly using the mails. Secretary Whitney has ordered the United States man of war Galena to go to' Port au Prince, llayti, and to remain there during the present disturbances, to pro tect American interests. The report that the large appro priations made by Congress had wiped out the surplus tor the cur rent fiscal year, is believed to have been started bv the republicans, in order to have some shadow of an excuse for abandoning their proposed tarifi'bilL Senator Beck says it is all nonsense; that there will be a big surplus this year, as usuai, and that the appropriations have been, with the exception of the river and harbor bill, uudor the estimates. WAMIIXCJTON IYETTKU. From Our Regular Correpouden-t. The Kepublican liars are now trying to get in their fine work. A leport was seiit'out from New York to the effect that Mr. Cleve land had requested' Mr. Brice to resign 'ax chairman of the Nation al Executive Committee, and that he had asked Senator Gorman to the position. A more, barefaced li than the above 'was never pub lished. Not only has Mr. Cleve- "111 SOX OLIVER.9' State Chronicle. "My Son Oliver" is one of the boldest and most brazen tricks t ere iii speech lcfore" the people we est now as heretftfore, because ho is a Democrat and wants to . see the cause of Democracy triumph ant for the good of the people. "My Son Oliver" w campaign ing over the 8tate in the role of an Alliance man, in order to make votes among the fanners. Yet he at the same time poses as a Kepublieau. Ha unhesitatingly and imblushingly avows that he stands aqnarely npon both the State and the National Republi can platforms. The National Be- publican platform says, among other things: - "We douotinco the Mills bill." One of the features of the Mills bill is , the reduction of the tariff on the manufactured cotton goods. It is very clear therefore that "My Son Oliver" is out and out opposed to the Mills bill, knowing that the National Farmers' Alliance has put itself on record as favoring the -Mills bill in anticipation for the protec tion of the country. The National Farmers Alliance, at its meeting m 188. adopted the following which is precisely what is of the very scope of the Mills bill, which "My Son Oliver" is antagonizing with all his power: " e demand such a revision of the tariff as will lay the heavi est burdens on the luxnries aud the lightest on the necessaries of life, and as will reduce the in comes from imports to a strictly revenue basis." Although fundamentally at war with the work and principles of the Alliance, he would have mem bers of it vote for him. Of conrse they will spew him out of their mouths. They are not such dullards they cannot see that his success means the overthrow of their most cher ished schemes. And thev arc not so disloyal to their organization as to betray its beneficient oper ations and defeat its central pur pose, wrhich is the elevation and p rasper i ty o f the agricult ural in terests bT the coun try. Moreover it is well and widely known that he, in joining the or der, obligated himself to carry out the principles which we res pectfully call to his attention. In utter disregard of his obligations he is opposing them.
